Do you need a water aeration system?
“The most important thing in life is to breathe”
Aeration is the most important requirement for happy fish! Oxygen levels in any lake should be monitored daily. There can be vast swings in the dissolved oxygen content in pond water caused by changes in atmospheric pressure, temperature, weather, algae, biomass, and sunlight. During the summer months when the water temperature is high, there is less dissolved oxygen than in the winter when the temperature is low. Added to that, in the summer we have algae and weed growth and a higher biomass. Oxygen levels can swing wildly from 200% supper saturation down to 0% total depletion. On the farm, we try to maintain a level of 40% or higher but this can be challenging when feeding over a ton of food per day!
Recently, we have invested in automated oxygen monitoring systems on the farm that read the oxygen level every few seconds. These systems display the current oxygen level and turn the aeration devices on or off when parameters reach a pre-set level. This gives us peace of mind knowing that the oxygen levels never become critical.
We supply a range of water monitoring equipment and aerators, and can advise on all aspects of fish husbandry.
Fountain Aerator
Although smaller than a paddle wheel aerator, these units provide a reasonable amount of oxygen for smaller ponds/lakes. They come with a fountain attachment which sprays a cone approximately 5 metres high and 5 metres wide. They are rated at 750w and can simply be tethered with a weight at the
correct position in the lake. They are also supplied with a hose tail so the unit can be used as a 3’ pump. The unit is supplied with approximately 15 meters of cable and a three-pin plug. This can also be used with the DO5021.
These units are priced at £250 plus VAT and delivery.
