30 years of breeding the finest fish
The hatchery is the most important part of our operation. Without our knowledge of artificial spawning, we would have nothing to sell! Jason is a self-taught hatchery specialist and has been around hatcheries for 30 years. He has seen how it is taught in colleges and has observed the way many professionals in many countries spawn fish. He has spent many hours watching and listening and can now achieve a 98% success rate when spawning fish in our hatchery.
How does fish spawning work?
The process is relatively straightforward. We choose the fish we wish to spawn, adjust the temperature and lighting to simulate spring conditions, and inject a hormone 24 hours before we want the fish to release their eggs. We then extract the eggs without hurting the fish and fertilise them with the male milt.
There are a few processes to follow, but after three days, we have millions of little fry swimming in the hatchery systems. There are approximately 150,000 eggs per litre of carp eggs. This means that a typical 10lb fish could be carrying 450,000 eggs. The little fry stay in the hatchery for approximately 5-7 days where they triple in size. Then, they are transferred to a mud pond that has been conditioned for them. After approximately three weeks, the fry are 1” and have full scales and colour.
We are happy to show anyone around the hatchery and explain the process further. We are in the process of building a new hatchery, which will be purpose-built and fitted with the latest systems for spawning.
